As well as our normal WordCamp London presentations, we are excited to be able to offer two free workshops to WordCamp London attendees, both on 23rd November. Both of these are around WordPress themes.  WordPress Theme Fundamentals, run by Michael Kimb Jones, is aimed at beginners to WordPress theming, while the Theme Team from Automattic will be holding a workshop to teach you how to use the theme customizer.

Both workshops require that you bring your own laptop as well as having WordPress installed locally. You can read more about the requirements on each workshop’s individual page.

Note: you will need a ticket for WordCamp London to attend either workshop.

WordPress Theme Fundamentals

This course is aimed at beginners to WordPress themes.

If you’ve ever built a website with WordPress, you’ve probably wondered if you should build your own theme. But where do you get started? There are so many tutorials out there, so many courses to be taken, themes to be broken. Whether you want to build a theme from scratch or just learn how to better customise them, this workshop will cover all of the fundamentals that you need to find your way in to WordPress Themes.

The WordPress Theme Customiser

This course is aimed at advanced themers.

Are you a theme developer that wants to give your users some options, like color schemes or a logo upload? Have you been eyeing the powerful Theme Customizer but don’t know where to start? Are you still creating theme option pages from scratch the old way and don’t know how to transition? Or maybe you’re already using the Customizer, but want to take your options to the next level. If any or all of these apply, then this workshop is for you.

Join a group of wranglers from the Automattic Theme Team in a workshop covering all aspects of the Theme Customizer, from basic implementation to custom controls, sanitization, and transitioning from existing theme option pages. We’ll walk you through examples, building a simple theme with numerous options, and then spend some time answering your questions and giving one-on-one help.

Got something to share? Want to tell people a cool new WordPress trick? Think people can learn from your experiences? At WordCamp London, you’ll have a platform to share them with the world.

On Saturday afternoon we’ll be running 5 minute lightning talks, giving you the opportunity to take to the stage and share with the WordPress community! Some ideas for what you could talk about:

  • Quick “how-tos”
  • Show off your workflow or setup
  • Share a story about your involvement with WordPress
  • Tell us about a cool project you worked on and what you learned
  • WordPress secrets you wish everyone knew about
  • The one thing that changed your WordPress life

Lightning talks are not for product pitches, they’re about sharing something that people can learn from. You can sign up right here (if you’re using slides we’ll need them emailed to us by 18th November). The deadline for signing up is 16th November, but don’t wait until then. We’ll accept the first ten that we think sound cool! As soon as we have ten we’ll announce them on the website.

Sign up for the Contributor Day

The WordCamp London Contributor Day will take place on 24th November at Mozilla Spaces, London, 11am – 6pm. The Contributor Day is an opportunity for people to get together to contribute to WordPress. It’s for both seasoned contributors and people making their first foray into getting involved. Everyone is welcome, but please note that numbers are limited to 70. So please do not register unless you plan to attend and you plan to contribute to WordPress. Here are some of the things you’ll be able to do:

  • Contribute your first patch to core
  • Fix bugs
  • Test
  • Translate WordPress or WordPress plugins
  • Write documentation
  • Help out on the support forums or IRC
  • Contribute to BuddyPress
  • Contribute to GlotPress
  • Get involved with accessibility
