FAQ: Questions You Want To Ask About Speaking At WCLDN

We want to hear your stories!

So to encourage you along, we’ve brainstormed some of the most frequently asked questions about applying to speak at WordCamp’s – and we’ve done our best to answer them here for you, in full. If there’s anything you feel we’ve missed, or something you think is worth adding – please leave us a comment below.

What is a Call for Papers?

A Call for Papers is the WCLDN 2016 version of a Call for Speakers.

This year, we’ve decided to open a ‘Call for Papers’, rather than a ‘Call for Speakers’, as we wanted to open up the variety of session formats available and encourage you to submit something other than a standard presentation. If you have an idea for a panel or something else, don’t hesitate to apply!

Please note, our ‘Call for Papers’ does not limit applications to academics only; it is open to anyone and everyone!

Be Inspired: A Successful Submission to our Call for Papers from WCLDN 2015

Anyone who wants to apply to speak at a WordCamp wants to know what makes a successful submission. We don’t have an answer: we feel that what stands out about all our successful submissions is that they have nothing in common.

We want speakers who will entertain, educate, inform and delight our attendees; below is a successful submission to our call for papers from WordCamp London 2015 designed to inspire you and encourage you to apply with your idea.

Please do remember that we have a slightly different submission format this year, so you may see different questions; however, this example gives you a general idea of what we are looking for, and helps guide your own submission. We’ve omitted some of the questions and answers to ensure Jo’s personal information isn’t made public; but we’ve included everything else which is relevant to submitting a paper.

Do you want a creche at WCLDN?

Your WordCamp London organising team is striving to ensure the event we are planning is suitable, accessible and welcoming to all – including future WordPress contributors and users! Throughout our planning process, we’ve aimed to ensure that anybody who would like to come to WordCamp London is able to, including parents with young children.

We would like to now call on you to gather comments and suggestions from anybody interested in making use of a creche at WordCamp London 2016. We can’t stress enough that nothing has been confirmed, as we wanted to ensure there was enough demand to warrant this additional expense. We kindly urge you to register your interest now in order to ensure your voice is heard.

WordCamp London will certainly be a child-friendly event, and we encourage parents to accompany their children to talks and sessions – we think they’d have a great experience! For parents who do not feel like their children would find the sessions interesting, we’d like to ensure you are still able to attend the event so please register your interest if you’d like the option of a creche.
