This year, for the first time, WordCamp London is hosting a Kids Workshop. We’re inviting children from Whitchurch Primary School to join us, on Friday 13th April, to learn how to set up and manage personal site—from publishing content to changing the way a site looks like.
The Kids Workshop has previously been held at WordCamp Belgrade, Varna and Sofia with much success, and we’re excited to be able to host this event at WordCamp London too!
Workshop details
The workshop’s main goal is to enable each child to create a personal website and learn how to manage its content. All children work with volunteer experts who help them through the initial setup and guide them through creating different types of content which they need to think of themselves.
The workshop will start with a short exercise in which each kid needs to create a list of the three things they really like and three activities they really enjoy. They write that down on a piece of paper and take turns introducing themselves to the others and reading their lists of favourite things.
Each child is then taken through the steps of setting up a site on WordPress.com with a volunteer displaying the steps on a computer connected to a screen so each child can follow each step.
At the end, we’ll do a “show and tell” session where each child presents their website and has a couple of minutes to talk about it.

Many thanks to everyone at WordCamp London 2018 for making this possible. The children, and staff, are really looking forward to it!
So are we! Thank you, Paola 🙂
This is something I definitely want to do/organize/try in the future…
Next WordCamp Bari 😉
Is it open to other children?
It is not, unfortunately. We would have loved to be in the position to do that!
It’s a great idea Franz – I’d definitely have brought my two children along if it was open to all!
I’m bringing my sons on Saturday, it’s a shame that they can’t attend this workshop on Friday.
Thank you for you comments, Clare & Natascha! We would have loved to welcome all children who were interested. Due to the strict child protection regulations in the UK, opening this up to the public without the legal support of a school, would have been near impossible for what is a volunteer-organised event. We’ve been lucky to work with a school who did an outstanding job helping us work through the fairly complex legal requirements—insurance, risk assessment, etc.—that a workshop like this inevitably carries with itself. We do hope your children have an amazing time at WordCamp London, and if there’s anything we could do to make your or your children’s visit easier, don’t hesitate to contact us!
