At WordCamp London, we’re lucky to be in the position of building on a series of successful past editions and we’re always thinking of ways to keep up the high standards and add new things to the mix.
Last year, our ‘Activities Room’ quietly tucked away from the main tracks served as a place for people to break out, play some board games, or do some work.
What to expect in the Activities Room this year
This year, the Activities Room will have three events happening at selected times and dates: Happiness Bar, PHP Upgrade Bar, and last but not least, Gutenbar.
Happiness Bar
If you’ve already attended a WordCamp, you’ll likely have seen this before. Although WordCamps, in general, are a space for learning and sharing knowledge, the Happiness Bar is a designated place for attendees to have their WordPress questions answered.
Are you:
- Having an issue with your WordPress site?
- Particularly excited about a talk you’ve just watched and would like to learn more?
- Confused about where to start with a certain plugin, theme, feature, code practice?
Then the Happiness Bar is for you! Whatever your question is, whatever topic you want to talk about, you’ll probably find someone to chat with. The Happiness Bar is the best place to find the right person to talk about your WordPress-related challenges, and if they can’t answer your question right there, they can guide you to the answers.
The Happiness Bar is open on 14th and 15th April (both conference days) during the official breaks (please check the schedule here for the ‘Break’).
PHP Upgrade Bar
More than 40% of all WordPress websites are still using PHP 5.6, which is not actively supported anymore and is only set to receive security updates until December 2018.
If your sites are in that 40%, or if you’re not sure, come along and visit the PHP Upgrade Bar and we’ll help you find out.
At the PHP Upgrade Bar we will:
- Help you determine what version you’re currently running (if you don’t already know).
- Help you push the update button on your host.
- Revert the upgrade if it breaks something and make notes on what broke (if it’s not something we can sort in a button click or two) so that we can report it to whatever plugin or theme has caused it.
- Ensure you are running the most recent version that your site supports, and hopefully get you up on an actively supported version at the very least.
Gutenbar
Gutenbar is a new initiative at WordCamp London and an individual discussion and demo session at WordCamp London to support business owners, agencies, and freelancers getting to grips with Project Gutenberg, and the new WordPress editor.
Outcomes and Aims
- Moving forward with Gutenberg
- Supporting developers, agencies, business owners through the necessary transitions
- An opportunity to demo and showcase the great work others have done with Gutenberg!
The full schedule and more event details will be announced very soon. If you already have something to share or demo to the community, please tweet us using the hashtag #gutenbar.
There will be more information about Gutenbar and an opportunity to submit and vote on topics for the discussion very soon.
